In 1796, George Washington warned us to "Guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism."

"Players kneeling disrespects our flag", he says.

■MEANWHILE: The self appointed arbiter of who and what is patriotic... bounced about like a hyperactive toddler, muttered incoherently to the music (because he obviously didn't know all of the words) and didn't place his hand over his heart while a military band played ‘God Bless America’ behind him.

■AND his handpicked State Dept spox eff'd up the BASIC facts about D-Day, citing the D-Day invasion as an example of the “very strong [US-German] relationship”. #facepalm#doublefacepalm#megafacepalm

■THEN our Historical-Illiterate-In-Chief invoked the 1812 burning down of the White House while on a call with the Canadian PM to discuss 45*s unilateral and bone-headed tariffs.

He, and anyone who supports him, have NO MORAL HIGH GROUND on which to criticise the patriotic expression of NFL players or anyone else (not that they ever did...but, at least now we can ditch the pretense).

Instead of buying into his divisive culture war... Do us all a favor and buy 45* a history book, Schoolhouse Rock on DVD, and the sheet music (with lyrics) to 'God Bless America'.

“…warn against the mischiefs of foreign intrigue, to guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism.”

The Address of Gen. George Washington to the People of America on His Declining the Presidency of the United States, September 19, 1796

Yeah. What George said.
